Lake Thrallveston – A Hidden Gem for Serious Anglers
Tucked just outside the quiet town of Thrall, Lake Thrallveston offers an exclusive fishing experience on its 37-acre waters. This soil conservation lake, known for its fluctuating water clarity, is ideal for anglers seeking a challenge and the chance to reel in some truly impressive catches.
Key Features:
- Unique Water Conditions: The lake’s water fluctuates between turbid and phytoplankton-rich hues, with visibility typically under 24 inches—sometimes less than 15 inches. While this can make fishing slower, it creates an environment where the rewards are worth the wait.
- Shallow Waters & Lily Pads: Most of the lake is less than 6 feet deep, with lily pads populating the two large arms. When the lake is full, a creek runs for several hundred yards and reaches depths of 7-8 feet, offering another spot to explore.
- Impressive Bass Population: Recent electrofishing tests revealed an extraordinary number of large bass—75% of bass were over 2 lbs, and 25% were over 4.5 lbs. These findings are an incredible testament to the lake’s potential for catching trophy-sized bass.
- Forage Base: The lake supports a healthy forage base, including abundant bluegill and golden shiners, ensuring your fishing experience will be rich with opportunity.
Boating & Access:
- Boat on the Pier: The boat is stored in a lift on the pier, and there is a switch to raise and lower it. After use, please return the boat to the lift and raise it a couple of feet above the waterline.
Fishing Experience:
- Not for Novices: Due to the lake’s low water visibility, fishing can be slower, and it’s best suited for more experienced anglers. While action may not be nonstop, the potential for catching solid, big fish is high.
- Tested Fishing Results: During a 10-hour trial, an experienced fisherman caught 15 fish, with his best five totaling 6.9 lbs, 5.65 lbs, 5.25 lbs, and two just shy of 5 lbs. If you’re after quantity, this may not be the lake for you, but if you're looking for solid, trophy bass, this is the place to be.
Expectations: This is a lake for anglers who are patient and persistent, willing to put in the time for the reward of catching big fish. If you’re ready for the challenge and the thrill of reeling in heavyweights, Lake Thrallveston will deliver.
