Having fished at Malouf twice in the past month, the grass was still dormit; that’s no longer! 72 degree temps, wind SW at 8-10mph, water visibility varied throughout the lake. Doesn’t look like they’ve gotten the rain we have around DFW, as the lake was down about a foot. Arrived at noon, and always make a few casts to the left of the ramp in the corner. The grass was super thick and water was really low, no takers. Fished to the right of the ramp and got a couple on a frog. Motored down to the far south end and that’s when I realized the vegetation was alive and well. I’ve never fished Malouf this early in the year, so hadn’t see it this thick. I did make my way all the way to the South end, but had to run my trolling motor almost at water level and had to clear it multiple times. The SW corner where I nailed them last time was almost unfishable due to it being so shallow and heavy grass. Caught a few mid-way down the lake while drifting and headed to the east side. Really solid bite in a few spots. Bass would hit and sometimes just get completely engulfed in grass so couldn’t fight much.
Made it down to the NE corner and caught threee fish on three casts on the frog. It’s one thing I’ve noticed about Malouf is if you put a bait right in front of their nose, you barely have time to make the first crank on the reel before it’s hit. The N end has a solid grass mat about 10 feet wide, which made for some fun fishing. I tossed a frog along the shoreline to the grass and would run a chatterbait or jerkbait on the outside edge. Caught a few here and there.
Headed to the trees and caught 3 quickly on a jerkbait. Went back and worked the best spot on W side and then the entire E side again.
Swimbait and frog were the two producers.
Left at 4:30pm with 21 boated. I am sure in the next few weeks the grass will settle in and the lake will be much more approachable in the shallows. As always, fun time at a PWF property!
