Headed to Grain Bin on Saturday with fellow member and friend Scott Wheeler. Amazing how different a lake fishes just a short time after from when I last fished it a couple weeks ago. The proximity of the lake is so nice – however, I wanted to take the tracker this time so we could fish together and for the foot pedal.
- Bright (too bright) sunny day, water temps started at 67 and warmed to 72/3 by the end of the day. Decent wind at times. Clear water to 5ft+ with a mild green tint.
- Coontail/Milfoil/Pond Weed had boomed since I was last here. I saw a fertilizer tub on the pontoon when we arrived and the owner indicated he had recently fertilized.
- See picture of cloud of bass fry which was noted in many spots around the lake. Interesting how dumb they are when they first hatch. Sitting on top of the coontail vs. in it.
- We tried running the pattern Joseph Christopher and I used last time with baits like chatters/swimjig/spinners/speedc raw over the grass in the flat, but either they weren’t in the holes on the flat (very few were seen roaming that flat) or they just wouldn’t come up.
- Best pattern was a frog next to pond weed, SLOWLY and I mean slowly, walked – really had to keep it in their face and walked back and forth.
- Scott caught the biggest of the day slowly draggin a plastic near a drop off on the main point.
- Saw fish all over the 360 sitting on top of the grass in 10-15 FOW but just could not get many of them to react.
- Caught mostly males but they were decent size for males in the 1.5-3lb class and overall had a fun day.
- The frog hits were aggressive once they finally committed – very few caught outside the very top of the mouth with both hooks.
I think if I had to make an adjustment in retrospect, I needed to toss the heavy weight beaver style craw into the holes in the coontail/milfoil on the flat. I tried this on the edge of the drop offs but I think I really needed to just flip into the holes with a heavy plastic to get a reaction bite from the females.
They should be more active in a couple of days. It was very bright.
