Reservation Number : 35679
Property Name : The Bluffs of Sandy Shores
Reservation Date : 03/29/2023 All Day -
Total Fish/Sizes : 40, 26 culled, returned fish 2.5 - 3.9 lbs
Lures Used : lizard, senko, fluke, cranks, chatter, buzzbait

Partner and I caught 40 but couldn’t locate the big girls.  In at 8AM, out at 5PM.  Water 61 degrees at start and mostly clear to 1.5 feet. Mostly cloudy with wind not being a factor. Majority caught on lizards with black being the most successful.  Wacky rigged senkos and white fluke produced results and a few on crawdad crank.  Fish were scattered. Primarily fished the banks and around the islands and almost all fish appeared to be males and were caught in 2-8’ of water.  Vegitation minimal.  Spoke with the owner.  He’s doing a lot: adding baitfish, the pontoon boat, dock, etc. to make it a premier property.  He said he doesn’t really fish, but just happened to have caught a 7 pounder the other day.  Maybe I should start “not really fishing”.

Thanks for havesting 26!. The owners brother has caught several fish in the 7 lb range this year and got a 9 to 10 lber to the boat and it broke him off this morning. We added 500/600 lbs of Golden Shinners a month ago, fertilzing next week and adding 50,000 shad in May. We are feeding a pallet (1 ton) of the best fish food on the market, every other month and he has a otter trapping company on weekly retainer checking more than 20 traps. The owner is likely as committed as in owner in the state to make this a trophy fishery. A member is going to pop a big one in the next 30 days. The bass are almost 5 years old. We should have a few 10 lbers already. Someone will get one in  2023.

Hi Steve,

Love the owner putting so much back into this property as it’s amazing!  I saw the instagram post from @Tylersreelfishing showing the recent fish kill.  It looks like the catch numbers are down per trip, but granted how many culls each trip had last year, it makes sense.  Did the fish kill take out a good amount of big bass too?  I know they caught a few on his video, but just wondered.  Would love to get back here later this year!

Hi Ryan,

We have seen the video Tyler did for us and there might be a bit of “selling” on Tylers part on what happened. Videos are designed to get folks to watch with a “hook”.  We asked Tyler to test fish the lake to see if there might have been a fish kill, as we were concerened that there might be. We saw no evidence of a fish kill, but wanted to check. The footage of dead fish you see in Tylers video is not from the lake, but rather stock footage, found on the internet.  Perhaps there was a misunderstanding on our part or Tylers part in our communication on what happened at the Bluffs.  But, it made for a great tag line and video.

THERE WAS NOT A FISH KILL, as the video stated. However, the owner added about 20 semi loads of brush (primarily oaks) to the lake and it turned the water brown from the tannins in the oaks. We had the water tested and it showed “normal” results. Because the water turned tea color (like you see in an east Texas lake) we wanted to verify all was OK.

The video shows Tyler and Alton Jones Jr. with 3 bass estimated to be 8 pounds or larger. So, the big bass are still in the lake and in fact likely larger this year than last year. The owners brother who has caught several fish over 7 lbs in the last 6 months got a fish to the boat that was estimated to be between 9 and 10 lbs this past week.

Thanks

Steve

Thanks so much for the reply Steve!  Glad to hear no fish kill and no doubt there are still monsters in that lake.  Look forward to getting back out there soon.
