Pre-spawn brings excitement and the hope of a productive spring. There were higher temperatures predicted today so we took off and headed out to Tara, a lake that we know holds some very nice bass. The lake was full and the water was cold. We pretty much threw the whole box, everywhere. Getting a bite was tough today. So was holding the boat in one place. After working the dam thoroughly without a bump we proceded back North on the East side of the lake, seeking refuge from the wind in the cut about halfway down. We picked up a few throwing jackhammer fire craw chatter baits with watermelon green vile bug and vile craw trailers. It was only about 2 to 3 feet deep up in that cut. We then worked back North on the East side towards the lower end picking up another in shallow water on the same bait. In early afternoon we caught one more close to the West brush pile marker close to the dam on a watermelon/red brush hog. Soon after, the wind started gusting so high it was almost impossible to fish so we headed out around 3:00. All of the fish were in the 1 to 2lb range – nothing very big on this trip. But that’s OK. It was nice to be out and nice to at least catch 5. Better, warmer days are coming. And we know from experience how lakes like this one can produce. We just wanted to be the first there when they turned on. Can you blame us?
