About 11:30 today, I decided I’d rather be fishing than working, so booked a super last minute trip to Malouf Lake (my first time on this lake).  I grabbed a few rods, and as much gear as I could think of quickly and headed out.  Got on the water around 1pm and fished to about 4:30pm.  I forgot my fish finder in my haste, so I’m only guessing that the water was high 50s/low 60s.  Visibility was about 18 inches.  I was in very shallow water the whole time as far as I could tell (based on how I had to fish my lures).  Weather was overcast with variable winds between calm and 10 mph, and I got a couple of light showers that passed through.  I headed toward the trees to the right of the boat launch, but fishing that area with a mini chatterbait in shad color only landed 1 small fish.  Also tried shallow crank (but hit grass every time...too shallow), spinnerbait, Tex rig curly tail worm, swim jig, and lipless, but got no action in the trees.  I moved toward the bank and started catching a few on a bluegill pattern spinnerbait fishing it as shallow as I could to keep it above the grass (which is still green!).  I also started catching some on a 3.8 swimbait on a 1/4oz Gamagatsu underspin head casting out toward the middle.  All the fish came between the trees and boat ramp fishing down the near bank.  I made a run at the end of the afternoon to the opposite bank and missed a couple of fish also on the spinnerbait.  All the fish were small, from dinks to maybe 1.5 lbs.  1 Crappie was nice size (maybe 1 lb).  Fun time on a short notice trip for sure.
