I needed some time in the kayak and knew the storms were coming but didn't care and wasn't disappointed.  I hit the water at daybreak and temps were 54 degrees and water temp was 65. Winds in the morning were a steady 10-13 and kicked up to 17mph. Paddled around early in the morning with the 2d sonar and marked a few spots with some buoys that appeared to be thick with structure. As previously reported healthy grass line around the entire lake. Really thick and holding a bunch of shad.

I caught probably 15 or so and the biggest was 8lbs 6oz caught on a bladed jig ripping it through the grass. It caught me off guard as I didn't have the net ready and fighting it one arm and fighting the net with the other could have ended badly.  I caught a couple other really nice bass in the 4 pound range (4.7, 4.2, 4) and some other super chunk 2 and 3 pounders. Only 2 dinks for the day. The larger fish came on the bladed jig, either ripping through grass or suspended in open water at the 12-15 ft range. Also had success on drop shot, jerk bait and swim bait.

The hard wind coming from the north pushed some of the shad to the south side. With all the waves it was hard to see bass busting the surface but there were plenty of blowups 2ft from shore but deep in the weeds. Don't ever remember throwing a weightless fluke in 17mph winds but I did yesterday. It was the only thing I had with me that could slow work the open pockets and stay sub surface.  I started with a standard zoom fluke and a few swipes but no takers. Downsized to a Fluke Jr and that was the ticket.  Took a break around 11:30 as the storm rolled through. Went back out, temps dropped to 44 with steady rain. I was able to catch a couple more, again in open water on a bladed jig or around and in the weeds.  Called it quits around 1:30.

Those are the hardest fighting fish I think I have ever caught in AA. 6pounder broke a rod (an old rod, but it died with honor) this past spring. I must have fought the 8.82 that morning for 5 minutes it seems as it pulled my little boat around. Even the 4’s feel like trucks when you set the hook. Good work Mike!  Lots of fun in the AA

Thanks and totally agree. Those fish are absolute tanks and I used the net probably on 75% of the fish I caught. Glad to hear your rod died with honor and for a worthy cause.
