Date: 10-12-22: It was about 8:20 am when we arrived and we were immediately impressed with the nice boat ramp, impressive lake, and beautiful surroundings. It was our first trip to Malouf Lake in Lancaster. The first fish arrived courtesy of Trav’s second cast up towards the bank near a small stick up on a chartreuse and white jackhammer chatter bait with a small, white paddle tail trailer. This turned out to the bait of choice in the morning as we worked in 5 to 9 feet of water away from the dam, around the perimeter, and then back towards it on the other side. Although we lost count, we think we boated about 30 bass and couple of nice crappie in the morning hours (up to 11:30 am). Most were in the 1 to 1 ½ lb range. The largest was about a 3 pounder. Fish were caught all over the lake but in particular, under the power lines that cross the lake in 4 to 7 feet of water. A yo-yo retrieve prooved most successful, letting the bait make contact with the underlying grass, pulling through it, and then letting it pause. Most of the hits were on the fall of the bait. After lunch, a bright, chartreuse & yellow square-bill crank bait started lighting them up, again around the grass lines (around 6 to 8 feet deep) and into the grassy bottom areas (4 to 6 feet deep) primarily under the power lines. Again, many bites occured after the bait found the grass, broke free of it, and paused. We tried other baits with limited success. Many fish were also caught on a chrome rattletrap with a black back. We think we boated another 30 fish from about 1:00 up until we left, which was about 3:30pm. Obviously, a fantastic numbers day, and a good day learning about finding and fishing grass lines with different baits. The fish weren’t especially large but they put up a good fight. It was a priviledge and a pleasure, as always.
