My good friend Jon David and I scheduled Double AA for Wednesday 9/14 a few weeks back for the second leg of my post tax season fall fishing run and had a very solid trip – I get Bluffs next week.  Similar to last trip with Charles, no giants, but most fish between 2.5lbs and 4.5lb with a few 4.5-5lbers in there as well.

  1. Water was 79-82 degrees, clear to 5 feet or so, wind started early out of the North but quickly switched to the SE as the day drug on.  Periods of no wind to decent wind, pressuring rising and a crack above 30.
  2. Fish were not schooling quite as aggressively on top as normal, but did form up a fair number of times. The school on the south end never really materialized and the 3 primary North end schools and the West side school often ran into each other on the NW end, which they haven’t normally done when I’ve fished there (run into each other and on top of one another).
  3. Unlike last time when Charles and I drug the bottom for most of our fish, there was a very pronounced thermocline at 18 feet throughout the lake – right at the depth of the middle ridge. This completely changed my gameplan going in where I had intended to run stuff through the deep rocks.
  4. We tried to run TRIGs on the grass line with no success and had limmited success with a CRIG drug on the ridge.
  5. We primarily ran ghost colored (GP Pro Blue or French Pearl) jerkbaits and translucent shad color swimbaits – no underspin, just a jighead – they definitely wanted something more subtle and less flashy with the high pressure and lower wind field.
  6. Count to about 6-8 seconds and slow reel for the swimbaits, fairly standard twitch patterns for the jerkbaits on a standard or a +1.
  7. I did catch a nice one on an oversized frog.  A smaller bass came up to investigate, hit it, and then the big one told him to GFY
  8. There were long periods of no catching – but when we ran into them, we ran into them and caught multiples with a few nice doubles.
  9. Dead shad or thrown up shad was small – and our swimbait success was on smaller sizes.  When I ran out of 3.8” or smaller and upsized, I did not get bit nearly as well.
  10. I know a few people have this booked coming up – I think reading the thermocline to see where it is at and finding that midpoint depth will be key until the lake does a full turn (if it turns, not sure it does being so deep).  That plus find the shad and you will find the fish.

Great job putting this plan into motion to have a great outing!  And thanks as always for the great detail of your thought process.  I’ve got my first ever trip to AA coming in a few weeks, and this just get’s me excited.
