This was my first time out as a new member of PWF and I was not dissappointed.  I brought my own boat and I’ll address that last.  I started fishing south from the ramp on down along the grass line and it was somewhat slow fishing, as I picked up 3 fish after about 100 yards.  The wind was blowing steadily out of the south so i decided to flip it around and ease back down to the wind blown bank on the north end.  I decided to fish the trees as i made my way back down and it turned on immediately.  I started cranking a DT10 between the timber and brush piles in 10-16’ and picked up around 10 fish in 30-40 minutes.  I picked up a ¾ biffle head with a zoom mag worm to fish the stumps and piles at 16-18’ and landed 3 more.  Once I was at the north end I slowed it down near the drain pipe with a shakey head and a wacky worm.   That northern bank produced another 10 or so fish before I made it to the corner.  After stopping for a little lunch break I stayed with the wacky worm.  I was spot locked and caught 7 more in one are near the small jetty on the east side.  Considering I had them dialed in shallow 5-8’ of water, I decided I would fish deep the rest of the day and try to pick up a kicker or two.  Picked up a green pumpkin chartreuse jig with a rage bug summer craw trailer dipped and went to town.  This is where the beat down really started.  Im not kididng when I say i caught at least another 20 plus.  I went through 2 packs of trailers and was basically calling my shot on every tree or stump I hit  They were basically staged up on every tree except the 2 cypress.  I did test out color’s to see if they slowed down and they did.  So they were chewing and I was dialed in.  Green pumkin chartreuse flipping jig with rage bug summer craw trailer – Baby Bass Senko Wacky – Watermelon Candy Red Trick Worm & Watermelon Candy Red Mag worm – DT10 Shad Color Crank.  The only dissapointing fact is that I never caught a real kicker out of all of these.  Fish ranged 2-3lbs with a few 4’s mixed in.  Only 1 dink all day though, so they are definitely healthy.

Loading up was a bit tricky.  With the water low due to no rain, the concrete ramp ends near the water level so you’re trailer is in the mud.  It took a little bit of effort to get out and my boat & trailer were covered in mud and wrapped in grass.  It was worth it though for an absolute epic day of fishing.  I caught so many fish my hands were cramping on the way home.  Can’t wait to get out there and do it again.

The old pond dam is just south of the trees, and provides a nice transition area for the bass. Swimbaits and other moving baits work really well around there.

Fairly magical place, but yes, you will likely never catch anything over 4lbs at this location as there is no cull policy to drive the average size up.

I notice you didn’t try any topwater. For some reason, I’ve been able to get topwater strikes at Malouf any time of the year, any time of the day. Poppers or other slow/fast action topwater baits near the banks or around mats of vegetation.

Rion, welcome to the club, what a great way to start your membership!  Thanks for the detailed report, reports like these are super helpful to all our members.

Malouf is a unique lake for many reasons, it has been in the club more than 20 years and to our knowledge has never had a new stocking and we’ve never harvested.  The lake somehow manages itself and stays in balance with a great forage base and lots of healthy bass.  It is also unique because it is one of the few lakes in the club that doesn’t have any Florida genetics (again, as far as we know), so that’s why it is rare to get fish over 4 lbs there, a trophy bass for natives is 5-6 lbs.

Craig, I mentioned the main baits I caught them on.  I threw  top water for a while that morning down the grass lines and across broken areas if the grass (horny toads in 3 colors, and a whopper plopper).  Not a single strike.  But I could follow up with a jig or wacky in the same area and bang.  I just made the adjustment moving baits weren't what they were keyed on.  Caught 2 or 3 on a swim jig but only when I was killing it would they hit it.  They were keyed on structure facing up wind and a little deeper.  I've never had a day where they were so keyed on the jig.  Assuming it's because the forage is mostly bluegill.

Malouf was my first fish when I joined the club in 08.

The options of structure and cover and the proximity to home make it special.

Welcome to the club.
