Our son Mike (also a PWF member) and I fished Rough Creek Lodge on Saturday afternoon, March 17.  It was a windy afternoon, water temp 65-67 degrees.  We caught 50 fish, all of which were healthy, fat and gave a good fight.  The two biggest went 5 lbs each, one measured 21”.  There were a lot in the 2-3 lb range.  This is a beautiful lake with very clear and clean water.  Most fish were caught on spinner baits at or just inside the lilly pads back in the creek on the right, but some were also caught on large crank baits out in the channels.  It was a fun afternoon.

The new lower rates out here make catching 50 fish with two over 5lbs a bargain. Guys this is a big lake and sees only a few qualified anglers a month. Most of the people staying at the lodge only fish from the dock. I spent some time with the management at Rough Creek last week and they have very few guests who even fish. Rates went from $125 a day to $75 a day with a 2 person minimum. This lake is certainly one of the biggest values in the club. Not sure why more of you guys do not fish it. It has some huge fish and lots of fish in the 2 to 3 lb range. We electro-shocked the biggest fish I have shocked in 24 lakes; a 9 lb fish in the Summer of 2010.

Looks like a great property.  Just a bummer that it is a 2 person minimum.  My work usually only allows for last minute trips so it is nearly impossible for me to coordinate an invite with someone else.

Sean, I appreciate your comments about a 2 person minimum. It is a concern that we here from time to time. As you know we have made a conscious decision to improve the quality of our fishing lakes. We have been very aggressive with many lakes in terms of fisheries management; adding thousands of pounds of tilapia, thousands of pounds of threadfin shad, adding cover to many lakes and harvesting fish. Moreover, we have added 17 new lakes over the past 28 months, and removed 11 under performing lakes.  Finding lakes is not easy, finding high quality lakes is really not easy. When you find one; often different expectations are associated with them. One of those expectations is increased revenue. In most cases, we fish lakes only twice a week, once in awhile we may push it to three times at the height of the spring season. Frankly, allowing a single guy to fish a half day or even a full day does not generate enough revenue to justify giving the lake up for a full day. Moreover, in some cases the amount of money generated for a single person does not generate enough revenue to justify having the traffic on the ranch. As the club grows and we add more and more high quality properties the minimums will go up. The great news is that 80% of the club lakes do not require two person minimum. We try to offer something for those who like to take larger groups, those who like to fish by themselves, those who like to catch lots of fish and those who like to catch trophy fish.  Within the next 120 days we hope to develop a partner finder system that will make finding a fishing partner even easier. I am glad you posted your comments; as others have expressed the same feeling. And I hope I was able to answer why we do what we do.

Steve, does Glen Rose offer any boats or watercraft?  I will be staying with my buddy in Ft Worth in a couple of weeks and we would love to go, but don’t have a boat.

Glad to hear about some fish being caught.  Taking the wife to Rough Creek next Monday and Tuesday for our anniversary.  Going to do some hunting AND some fishing.  Sounds like we are going to have a really good time!  Thanks for the report Rick!

Frank, Rough Creek does not allow our members to use their boats unless you are a paid lodging guest. If you pay to lodge then fishing and the use of a boat is included in your overnight lodging. They go through dozens of trolling motors a year as their guests usually struggle to use them and just tear them up. Lodging prices start at $560 a night per couple and includes a 5 star dinner and breakfast. Come on Frank, your worth it!
