First time visiting Twin Lakes and certainly won’t be the last. I arrived at 2:30pm and fished until 7:30pm or so – before the sun really started fading. Absolutely stunning property filled with so many fishy areas – so much so that I only spent that time on West Lake and didn’t even get eyes on East Lake. I’d definitely recommend a full day to cover both lakes adequately. I even felt a bit rushed trying to properly cover just one lake in that mostly-half-day visit.
The drive down to the lake was great but I imagine that if the rain comes it’ll be a bit tricky without four wheel drive. Nothing was washed out but a bit steep at the initial approach to the lakes.
I initially walked the bank and that’s where I caught my biggest of the day. At the dam I was tossing a black/red 4” rage bug when a 5 pound post spawn beauty hammered me near a submerged log. Everything I caught in the day was feisty and very healthy. I never threw anything finesse to try and keep smaller fish at bay and it definitely paid off. Everything I caught was north of 2.5 pounder with a few in the mid 3’s as well.
After walking the bank I grabbed the smaller of the two PWF boats and even in the wind made good use of it. Just a small warning, there appears to be a small crack in the front of the boat and after a few hours on the water there was 16oz or so of water in the bottom of the boat. It never bothered me but a warning to anyone else using it. The larger of the two provided boats looked to be free of any issues.
Also, if you fish here I’d definitely suggest having strong gears and braid. I was in the thick of submerged timber and was catching bass every few casts and kept getting wrapped up. I exclusively throw 40 pound braid so it never bothered me but I’d hate for someone to toss light line and miss their PB because these fish knew to dive quick, and the fought hard to avoid being brought to the surface.
Another fun thing to note was seeing two beaver swim around. I made sure to watch to see if they were actually otters and they were definitely beavers out for a swim.
Lots and lots and lots of evidence of spawning action too. beds everywhere all across the entire lake. Everything I caught was within 20 yards of the bank so I imagine they’re all still in that spawn to post-spawn timing right now. I didn’t try to do any deep fishing towards the middle because it was so fruitful just casting parralel to the shore and slow rolling both swim jigs and chatter baits over and over.
Next time around I’ll definitely aim for a full day and hope to hit both lakes in search for one of those big gals that’s deifnitely hiding in thost east texas stained waters!
