This was our second trip to Hickory Creek on Easter Sunday. The previous year was a phenominal family outing with tons of fish landed. This year was a bit warmer but just as great. The day started overcast with light breeze and a light mist in the air around 8am. My brothers and I headed out in seperate directions one in the club boat and the other in my boat. Both groups had immediate success with top water poppers in bone, and fire tiger colors. The fish were actively feeding even coming clear out of the water to hit the poppers. Slow and steady pops produced nice strikes within a couple of feet from the bank. Green pumpkin magic Senkos rigged wacky style produced bites in between topwater fishing. Green pumpkin/blue laminate Googan crackin craws and green trick worms were conistent all day long. Bring plenty of baits as the incredibly large blue gill and crappie will remove your bait’s claws quite fast. Later in the day white rage swimmers rigged on Trokar underspins produced a ton of over slot fish in the back shallow pockets on either side of the damn. Casting up close to the bank produced hits usually as soon as the lure hit the water.
Fish sizes were noticably better than the previous year. The majority of fish caught were in the 2+ pound category with many fish well over 3 and several 4’s. Crappie were caught on road runners and Monkey Milk colored paddle tail style crappie jigs with a slow steady retrieve. Crappie sizes were smaller than the previous year and they were scattered all over the lake. A few were caught around the bursh piles located near the damn along with several nice bass. For the day we ended up with 22 under slot bass removed and 39 crappie. We lost count of just how many fish were caught but the number of bass over slot returned was well over 40. Mr. Wade came chat with us by the lake prior to leaving and we gave him a quick update on how we did during the day as well as to the quality of fish we were catching. This is a great property and has provided great family fishing experiences both trips. We look foward to going back again next Easter and may even try the back lake one day. All fishing was done on the big lake up front.
