My son and I fished Double A from sun-up to about 6 pm on a mainly overcast day in mid-April. The temps were very comfortable, but a consistent 10 mph or so breeze provided a constant annoyance. This lake is really interesting due to it’s depth, underwater features, and ‘shallow water shelf’ that runs the perimeter of the lake. There was quite a bit of grass/moss, primarily on the shallow water shelf that reduced our effectiveness. We brought two kayaks and used those about half the day, and used the job boat provided to fish together the other half. My Garmin Striker depth finder was critical to our limited success as we found some interesting features near the NE bank that held a lot of fish, resulting in focused attention pursuing fish in 15-25 feet of water. A chartreuse crankbait pulled out the first fish of the day (small – 1.5 lbs or so) and a little later, I caught our best fish of the day in this same spot, on a black and blue jig with a craw trailer. It was quite a thrill – a LONG cast, massive hook set, and long fight to the kayak with multiple jumps….each giving me heart palpitations.
It’s worth mentioning that the early morning did produce some top water action. I lost one on a pop-r (jumped and threw me). I lost another in the early morning on a zoom paddle tail swimbait (also jumped and threw me – this one in the 4 lb range).
Later in the afternoon, we spent some time in the cove on the West bank and got into a few on top waters, only one of which was landed (my son’s almost 4 lber (3.88) on a Lunkerhunt Pop-R Frog.
I really like this place….and better fisherman would have landed more fish undoubtedly. The strangest thing about this particular day is that there was no perceivable pattern detected. We saw tons of suspended fish in the 10-15 foot range and nothing seemed to get their attention, even on an overcast day when the fish are, by some experts theories, more aggressive. We tried crankbaits, rattle-traps, spinner baits, swim baits, and more...and aside from some consistency in our pop-r frogs during the 5-8 mins ‘moment’s when the bass were hitting the top of the water, there was no one bait that they seemed to care for.
We will be back for sure. I’ll likely return in the Summer or Fall to give it another go and the bass here are fat and strong! Thanks to Joe, the kind landowner whom we met late morning. He was kind, friendly, and helpful in giving us information about the lake.
