Reservation Number : 32109
Property Name : Cordo Lake
Reservation Date : 04/16/2022 All Day -
Total Fish/Sizes : 16 up to 2lbs
Lures Used : senko/spook/spinnerbait

Headed out to Cordo Lake for an afternoon of fishing with my buddy Deontae.  He was my sparring partner at the gym for 2 years and prepped me for nationals in both my tournament wins in ‘17/’18 – but he’s never been fishing so I thought I’d introduce him.  Glad to be fishing with him vs. him punching me in the face.

  1. Arrived at noon or so and fished till 4:30 when a front looked like it was about to roll in (thunder/wind).  It was cool with a decent wind – water was clear with a good amount of eel grass/pond weed.  Water temp was about 64.
  2. So since he’s never fished, we went through the basics and how to use a spinning reel.  Armed him with a senko and a spinnerbait while I threw a spook for the day.
  3. Caught them all over the lake, couple deep, a couple shallow, couple at mid depth.  Lot of bad casts, but he really started to get the hang of it and was able to land a decent amount of fish for his first trip out.
  4. Talked alot about the ‘why’ – what we were trying to do, what the colors of the lures represented.  Talked through hooksets and why sometimes he would lose fish, what a bite felt like, and all the other basics.
  5. Overall, I’d consider the afternoon a success – he definitely had fun and Cordo was a great place for him to learn.
  6. We used a mix of the boat and bank fishing.
  7. Thank you to the landowners for making experiences like this possible – you can’t really do this on a public lake and teach as well. One more person who is hooked...

That's cool. I used to own my own boxing gym in Amarillo Tx for eight years and I took a hand full of really good fighters(male and female)to nationals. Several of them are pros now.

Anyhow, tomorrow is my first trip out to Cordo. Hopefully it will produce at least one fatty to brag about. I'm going big or going home.

The Fraternity of Hands…

Water was pretty clear and there was a fair amount of good vegetation in the lake.  The trees in the middle are near deeper water and where we caught the better fish.

Good luck!

I'm not sure if I would qualify for the fraternity of hands.  I was boxing as a teenager in the PAL league in Buffalo NY.  My big quarter final bout was my last. I fought a kid named Tommy Owens. He hit me so hard in the forehead that all I could do was hang on to him until the bell sounded. At that point I hung up my headgear and gloves. I figured maybe a future in ping pong.   Later when I was 25 and in Hawaii in the Navy Duane Bobick came to work in our group.  Believe me there were no sparing partners in this group of nerds as we worked on computer systems. We didn't see much of him as he was training for the Olympics. Not sure what happened to him after. I know he went professional and fought for the belt but lost to Ken Norton.  So I justify having quick hands from boxing to quickly setting the hook.
