Not sure how or where to begin this fishing report due to the awesome day of fishing my brother Terrence and I had today. It was hard enough to come up with the appropriate title for this fishing Report because did not want to use the usual title of " Nice day at Grapeland Bennett.
So here goes nothing
For starters the driveway to Bennett Lake needs some work. This was one of my main concerns prior to making this trip and I checked previous fishing reports for info therefore I wanted to make sure I added in this report. It has a very large rut in several areas but were passable for regular size trucks like my brother's Toyota Tundra. However, trucks that are lifted like mine with 40x15.50r24 size tires will have to do their best at straddling the rut or just run through it. On the way out I think my truck tires may have flattened part of the rut. It's sad to see this property go down like this considering how I remember it during its glory days. Years ago I was blessed with the opportunity to have camped and stayed at the cabin at this property and fish from the pier.
Lake level was up but not at full pool. Grass was really thick in shallow areas of lake
Now for the weather. We arrived at 730 and was blessed to have overcast skies until 530pm. With little to no wind.
Therefore, we were able to fish the top water all day.
Part one: Frogs and field mice were the lure of choice for the top water action. We caught and lost bass all over the lake while targeting shoreline structure. My brother lost a nice 7 or 8 pounder on his frog after fish got in the grass. We had about 10 to 15 fish come unbutton over the day of fishing. We caught over 30 bass ranging from dinks up to 6lbs. We harvested 15lbs of bass for the day.
Part two: we decided to tie on jigs and spinner to fish for crappie. We landed a few nice slabs of crappie near the previous marked brush piles infront of the house and boat launch. We lost a few but was able to harvest 10lbs. Jig color were black and pink.
Part three: while fishing for crappie we were blessed with the appearance of a 10lb catfish. Yes on a crappie jig. Needless to say this was a tuff fight with a lot of drag being stripped away. We not only caught one we were able to land and harvest 5 catfish at 40lbs. We thought all the catfish had been removed from considering how abundant catfish were in this lake years back. Not to mention that we have not caught any here on previous visit to this lake.
Hope this fishing report help someone plan an outstanding fishing trip to this awesome lake. I tried to answer all the question I had in this fishing report to to my trip on April 15th.
Tight lines and good fishing
