Fellow member Zach Polyak fishing this weekend and this was the second lake we hit. I had never fished it before and it didn’t look like it had much pressure, so we gave it a go
- Property is easy to get to off the loop in Palestine. It is also near Nuna’s Cajun, which may have been the best meal I’ve had in quite some time (boild seafood platter, Zach had the shrimp poboy/gumbo). Make sure you hit this place up if you get a chance – super awesome.
- The lock is a weird lock that I happen to have at my house. The first line, not the middle, is where you line up the code.
- We fished from 7:30 to about 12:30. The wind was aggressive by that point and we were tired (especially me for my third day of fishing hard in the wind in a row).
- Water was 64 at start, 68 when we left. Relatively clear up to 8 feet with slight green stain. Wind was calm at first, then howling as the front approached. There is a fair bit of coontail that meets the break in the lake from 5 feet to 10 feet. Emergent waterwillow/sawgrass surround most of the lake.
- There are a number of cullable bass in this lake so we did out part. I even downsized to a small swimbait to pull them up and get them out. There are some good ones in there too. Zach and I both had success with a spook as well so was nice to turn a topwater bite. Clear water and breeze made that pattern work well.
- Most of the bigger fish sat on the 5’-->10’ break based on my electronics. I was able to pulla few up with a DT10. I saw a few crappie stacks (or at least they were grouped like them) but didn’t get any to take.
- The combo of a crank with a stick bait worked well enough after I did my culling duty.
- The area near the dam is best described a a bowl with a couple of flats extending past the main break. The lake then retreats into gradually shallower water to the North end with what is effectively a creek channel running through the middle from front to back.
- Both docks produced. The main lake point opposite the launch did not produce for us.
- I did find some bait at various spots in deeper water with bass sitting underneath.
