Fellow member and friend Randy Groves joined me to make the drive the Bennett Lake.  Absolutely gorgeous spring day – though maybe not the optimal conditions for fishing.  We had a good time catching a few while enjoying the seclusion.

  1. Fished from 9ish to 6ish. Water temp was 58 at arrival warming to 65 in most parts of the lake by the afternoon.  Glassy conditions for the most part and very clear water with a light green stain.  Eel grass and contail starting to grow in pretty good around the shallows.  There was alot of floating grass in the water (maybe from the wind the day before).
  2. We had a tough time developing a pattern.  The females caught were relatively skinny so not sure if they had much in the way of eggs or not.  There were some bucks in the shallows but not as many you might have thought.
  3. We used a little bit of everything – though soft plastics didn’t seem to yield much which was odd given the conditions.
  4. There is a stump line off the point leading into a cove opposite point from the launch area.
  5. Caught most of mine on a spook and a football jig.  Randy caught most of his on an ARIG and a shadrap.
  6. My biggest was had on a 1oz spinnerbait
  7. The only pattern we could decipher was that they were holding on the bottom in 10-16 FOW.
  8. Randy picked up some crappie on a rattletrap/shadrap.
  9. The lower end of the lake (opposite dam) was really stirred up and the water was dirty – didn’t fish it much.
  10. Primarily focused on the main and secondary points.
  11. Topwater bite early and late with a spook.
  12. Noticed very dark looking fish near the launch area – group of 25 or so.  Looked like Tilapia – couldn’t tell but they weren’t all bass and weren’t bluegill.
  13. Got on a jig bite by midday – and it was pretty consistent – more so than all the other stuff I threw that caught 1 here, 1 there.
  14. I probably should have throw a donkey rig/belly weighted fluke in retrospect but was happy with the fish we caught and catch rate given the conditions.
  15. Enjoyed the lake and happy to branch out of Dallas and hit some of these other spots.
  16. Harvested 10 of the bass between Randy and I.  Most were above the cutline/right at it.
