I decided to try the newest PWF property this afternoon. I arrived about 12:30 to gusty wind that would continue to increase in strength throughout the afternoon. I fished for just under 4 hours from the bank using a variety of attempted techniques. Because of the wind, the majority of my casts were concentrated on moving baits. I landed 8 bass. Most were around the 15” mark with the largest right at 20”. They bit a spinnerbait (chart./white), chatterbait (red), and a lipless crankbait (red).
Because the initial dig of this lake was obviously intended to replicate the boundaries of our great state, I can use that comparative geography to explain my locations. I did bank fish the entire time. All of my bites came in a fairly concentrated area. I stood along the southern border of New Mexico and casted toward the I-10 corridor. Pecos would be a good landmark that held a few fish (just beyond the timber). The wind was blowing across the whole state toward Texarkana. The Panhandle (ironically) was guarded from some of the gusts. I did pull one bass near Lubbock and another close to Amarillo. Because I didn't want to carry gear all the way around to East Texas, I chose not to fish that area (even though the baitfish could very well have been concentrated in the wind blown shore of Toledo Bend). I did try the Laredo and McAllen areas with no luck in the Valley. The bridge and dock are roughly El Paso. I tried a little there with nothing before returning to stand and cast from southern New Mexico. The small area beyond the bridge seemed shallow. I didn't give it much effort, but it looked like promising vegetation which could produce in the coming weeks and months. After a few hours, the wind finally defeated me today. It was a productive day exploring a new body of water and finding a place that I know can be good for future visits.
Overall, I think this is a fantastic addition to the club. I look forward to returning with my son. The edges are well maintained and will be easy casting for him. I would also like to go back and take the boat to the timber area. It would be easy to tie up and flip a jig into the timber. My guess is that bass and/or crappie have some homes there. I'm curious to confirm that. I'll definitely be back soon.
