Have you ever just dropped what you’re doing and decided the weather was simply too nice not to take advantages of it? Such was the case when the decision was made around mid-day that work and chores could wait. Let’s head out to Beaver Lake! We did so in the afternoon, arriving around 3:00. The lake level is down, probably around 3-4 feet, and the water was quite cold, probably upper 40’s or low 50’s. Remarkably, there’s still grass in abundance throughout the lake, however it was quite fishable. The chatter bait did the trick, both a hot craw with a green vile bug trailer as well as a white jack hammer chatter bait with a white grub trailer. We tried other baits but, nothing. We caught 16 and had 3 or 4 more get off. Most were in the 1 to 2 lb range. A couple of the larger fish may have pushed 3. The trick at Beaver Lake is to try to present the bait along the tops of the grass which can be a challenge. Many times the fish would hit after the first or second crank in a medium crank and pause retrieve. We were on the water about 2 ½ hours, enjoying the mild breeze and temerature in the upper 60’s. It sure felt good to have fish straining the line again and it’s nice to know that even if it’s a spur of the moment decision, fish can be caught and a good time can be had at a Private Water Fishing Lake. Now if we could just get a couple good soaking rains…
