Pam and I fished Button Lake on Friday – the weather mostly coorporating for this time of year. Bright skies, very breezy (14 to 17 MPH sustained), cold start, but warmed nicely. The water was about 50F with 15IN viz. The lake is very low – this lake will be much, much bigger with some needed rain. Anyway, we landed 13 – all solid 2 to 3 3/4 lbs – no dinks. So, the challenge ended up being that the old ranch v-hull (actually a very nice size and weight) had a pretty good leak, so we had to beach it shortly after launching. Bill, the ranch owner, was extremely apologetic and helpful. He made a special trip for some patching material and patched it midday. However, we felt like it needed to cure, so we did not take the boat out again.

Having said all that – Pam had 2 healthy bass in her first 3 casts (while we were in the boat for a few minutes). Honestly, it would have been a tough day on the water anyway – the lake is very exposed. We worked as much of the bank that we could and caught some chunks. We only used a few baits as we made our way around the perimeter – producers were lipless, chatterbait, underspin, and also caught the two 3 ¾ lbers on a med spinning outfit with a small swimbait on a guppy head (fun, lots of runs). Most catches came from around the dam – and also over on the far side from the launch.

All-in-all, we’d love another crack at this lake. We saw some chasing going on mid-lake (of course). You can double or triple our count fairly easily if you can get out and work that 6 to 9 FT range. Bill is very nice and hospitable and his ranch is a great addition to our club!
