Me and fellow PWF member Joshua Massoud hit The Jordan with hopes of warm temps and mild wind.  We at least got the warm temps :)

We launched the onsite pontoon boat at 9:15am to 49.9 degree water temps, 10+ mph SW winds and 6-9 inches of water visibility.  Water temp got to 54 degrees in the afternoon.

Using my lowrance sonar we located the deepest water just off the western bank between the island and the dam thinking that most fish would be holding here due to the lower water temps.  Sure enough we could see them hugging the bottom with the electronics.  We started power fishing with lipless crankbaits, square bills, chatter baits and spinner baits slow rolling the bottom but could not get them fired up.  The deepest water we found was 12 ft with a few other bowls at 10 ft.  Luckily Josh brought his 25lb dumbbell anchor which held us in place for the most part during the AM session.

As previous reports have mentioned the lake is void of vegetation, rock or brush piles so the bass can be anywhere depending where they’re at in their cycle.  We did see a large gizzard shad floating in the shallow southern part of the lake.  Josh finally was able to pickup a couple closer to the bank that dropped quickly to deep water.
At this point the wind really picked up and we could no longer keep the boat in one place so we decided to hit the bank on foot.  We picked up a few more on the east shore and moved over to the dam.  It was here that we found a magical 10ft circle where Josh would throw a chatterbait and I would throw the free rig hoping the bottom.  It was a tag team effort that would fire the school up and we managed to catch them every cast for 15-20 mins.  We thought we had the pattern so jumped back in the boat to work the rest of the dam.  We could not repeat our success and the wind was so strong it pinned us up on the bank and Josh had to jump in the water to get us dislodged.  We finished the day at our previous spot on the shore and grabbed a few more before calling it a day at 4pm.

Quick note on the pontoon boat. It is very spacious and has 2 nice chairs up front and a padded bench in the back, even has a sun shade which might come in handy in the summer. It has a 55lb thrust trolling motor and freshly charged battery that looks like it trickle charges via a solar panel.  Word of advice though even with the 55lb motor it is very difficult to maneuver with wind over 10mph not to mention keeping the boat in one place.

Good times – glad we got it figured out and overcame the wind.  I love wind until I don’t, but needed another anchor for that size boat.  I’m not great with low viz water, so was happy with the numbers we were able to pull up.  In retrospect, I think I needed to downsize a bit and a I should have followed up with a black shaky worm in the ‘off period’ when they weren’t completely on – always learning!
