Member Ron Dupree and I enjoyed a very good morning at Rock Chimney followed by a painfully slow afternoon.  Conditions were cloudy, almost no breeze, lake at full pool, water temp 65 when we arrived.  After a series of very warm days to start December, we thought the bass might be in the shoreline grass early.  We quickly saw that there was absolutely no visible activity in the shallows and shifted our topwater casts to areas with about 5 feet of water.  We enjoyed a productive Pop-R bite, landing a dozen 14-16” bass in less than a hour and losing a few more.  That bite ended and we targeted the edges of a mid-lake flat.  This delivered a flurry on crankbaits ( 6 or 7 landed) that ended abruptly but was followed by a long period with a steady worm bite (shakey head, wacky, dropshot, stick worms and trick worms).  By the time that we took a break for a tailgate lunch, we had landed 55 bass between 11” and 18” (mostly 15”), none from the shallow end of the lake. We had a quick visit with Mr. Stanley during our break and then we fished for another 2.5 hours ( mixed clouds and sun with more breezes) but it was slow and we only caught six more, all from near the dam.  Overall quite a good day for December (and we didn’t have to wear thermals to enjoy it).
