We’ve been looking forward to getting back to Tara Lake after a stellar trip last spring. Responding to a little cooler weather, we arrived and launched around daybreak on Saturday, August 28th. Fish were hitting the top around the brush pile on the right (while heading towards the dam). This fish activity was evident a good part of the day. We threw the whole box around that area numerous times, snagged a couple small bass on a chrome/blue back rattle trap and a while/chartruese chatter bait. Also caught (by accident) what appeared to be a drum as well as a few crappie. We then peppered the dam with our trusty hotcraw chatterbaits that had produced so well earlier in the year, but to no avail. Other bass and crappie were caught on a small, white grub and we picked up a couple more throwing around the brush piles with a white & green fluke. It was tough to find a consistent pattern, yet both of us were rewarded with a very healthy 4lb+ bass. One hit a small swim bait in the area where fish were moving around the top, the other hit the white and chartreuse chatterbait (no trailor) around the brush piles in the middle part of the lake. I think we ended up with 14 fish, total. Many were 1lb or under, and few were in the 2-3lb range. We got off the lake around 2:00. It seems like right now they like a smaller, light colored bait. We couldn’t make anything happen with senkos, jigs, or spinner baits. The water level was down a bit from our prior trip, exposing more of the brush piles. The lake and surrounding area are beautiful and we will certainly be back when the termperature is lower. A “slow day” at Tara is still a good day!
