I visited Lakota Lake just outside of Cleveland Texas yesterday. This lake is one of the closest lakes to my home area of Nederland, Texas and is just a tad more than an hour from my home which isn’t bad at all. I arrived at the gate and entered the code as shown on the papers and for the life of me could not get the lock to unlock for me. I called the office (Cole) and he ended up calling the landowner and gave me the code for the other lock to get in and even it was difficult to get to open, but it did open. The metal box that covers the locks make it hard to get to the lock and even though I oiled the initial code lock, I could never get it to open, so thanks Cole for getting me fixed up.

Once entering the property, I proceeded to head to the lake and the map shows a turn to the right after a while and I came up to a roadway that turns to the right, but it had a gate that was locked nad could not open it. I looked at google earth and saw that this was not the roadway to the lake, so I backed up and went straight which did head directly to the lake so if you go and see a turn to the right, don’t go that direction, keep straight and although small, it has some shell on road to keep it an all weather road as description showed.

The ramp is good for kayak or small boat, but trying to put a bigger boat could be an issue but guess it can be done as there is a small bit of shell at the edge of the dirt ramp in the water, it is limited. Worked great for me and my kayak.

Accordimng to Bass Forecast App, it was supposed to be a great day for fishing however, I was suspect on the app since it was a full moon and I have never done great with a full moon fishing. The app said best times were between 12 noon and around 2:30pm. I fished duing that time and fishing was super slow and only caught one or two during that time frame. I continued fishing and the further along the day went, the better fishing would get. It wasn’t one after another, but did catch steadily after around 4 or 5pm and I ended up catching 12 bass and 1 very nice crappie. My biggest fish was 3 lbs 2oz and another 2lb 13oz. The rest of the fish I caught were 14” and under. I had a good time fishing and is a nice lake to fish. It has some open water and some waters that are protected from winds. It was June Hot so I fished more in the open area to catch any breeze that I could. I caught fish however in both areas.

I did not catch tons of bass, but still believe the full moon was partially to blame. It was kinda funny though, as I changed from one bait to another, I would catch a bass on first or second cast on each bait change teasing me that I found the right bait to use and would not catch another using the same bait after fishing it a while and I changed again and caught another quickly and then never again on that bait. I fished square bill hard plastic, Rattle Trap, and lots of soft plastics which consisted of Epic Baits worms, swim baits, craw, and creature baits. Later in the day, most all caught were on an Epic Baits, Watermelon / Luner Dust Senko style of worm, but they would not take the worm earlier in the day.

I ended up leaving at 8:15 as the sun was going down. Be prepared for the tons of big bites of the pesky mosquito as they were bad, so make sure you have some spray or other to keep them away.

It gets very hot, but did cloud up some during the day which felt good. The water in the lake is a dark tea or coffee color tint to it and the water showed 89 degrees when I started and much of it turned to 92 degrees later in the evening in the more shallow areas. There is lots of vegetation all around the lake but was only on the bank edges allowing easy fishing up to the vegetation and not overrun with underwater mosses or grasses allowing easy fishing. Never could get a good bite on a frog in the grasses, but did slap at it a few times.

Watch a raccoon around one of the feeders that stayed there and watch for me a good while before I left it. It was a fun day of fishing as I had to cancel a trip 3 weeks prior due to forcasted storms and the next week, I hurt my back so had to cancel once again. Made it this time and was happy to feel the tap tap of the bass bite on a worm. Love the tap tap of a bass bite and is my favorite bait but then again, that was why I started making baits myself and now sell them as Epic Baits. Catching bass on your own bait is an awesome feeling.

Will I be back, I am sure I will. My only issue with this lake is that I see the building on the island and can only dream of owning such as place for myself and know that isn’t going to happen. Beautiful property. Guess I can only continue to dream! Thanks for allowing me to fish the property!
