Me and a guest fished Blackhat today, Sunday 5/23. We had a helluva day and I’m very tired. I had to make up for last weekend, and I certainly did.
Water clarity – heavy brownish stain the shallows from the rain, clearer on the main lake.
The morning bite near the islands was killer – we fished the inside channels between each in 2-4 foot of water and got on them during the shadspawn which lasted longer than normal b/c of the cloud cover/light rain. I think we caught 30 in the first 1.5 hours, I caught a couple good one’s – 4.5 & a 5.
Once that bite died off (or we caught them all), we moved the damn, and the two main points. Switched to jerkbaits and the occassional top water. My guest caught an 8.10lb fish near the second point on the east side of the lake off a spook about five feet off the north side of the point. He had to leave around noon and the bass bite seemed to taper off, so I switched to a small jerkbait and started catching crappie.
After 3pm, I started back on the bass and caught a few here and there till I had to leave. I missed a large fish back near the shallow islands.
We couldn’t really get a good frog or chatterbait bite going (at all) despite our best efforts. Maybe b/c of the water clarity on the former. Not sure about the latter as it should have been money. Drop shot worked again, not as well, but still produced. Jerkbait was solid during midday.
Just an observation but the 1.5lb-2.5lb class of fish seemed thin – everything under that or over 2.5lbs was chunky, but not that slot. Seemed like there were plenty of shad etc.
