Fished Black Hat on Saturday June 6th with longtime friend and PWF member Justin Dodd. Started the day fishing top water near the islands. Grass is thick there. We picked up a nice 3 lb bass on the east bank at the grass line. We worked our way down the east bank all the way to the dam. Justin caught a crappie and then a 3 lb 15 oz bass at the dam with a wacky rig. We worked the aerators with various crank baits and the grass line with a green jig and creature bait with moderate success. Eventually caught 8 bass and a crappie. Justin’s permit from his wife expired at noon so with the temperature at 90+ we loaded up.
I went home took a shower and a long nap. I arrived back at the lake alone at 6:00 PM. I drifted across the lake casting a chrome rattle trap. I caught 3 crappie fairly quickly between the east side point and the nearest aerator. I fished the dam side catching 4 bass all in the 1.5 to 2 lb range.
I ended the day watching 2 deer at a feeder and another browsing in the field while listening to a group of hogs near the north end.
Helpful Advise #1. I used the Waze app to get to the lake. It took me on a course that turned off the highway too soon that ended with a sign that says “road impassable when wet”. Make sure you go east on 78 all the way to county road 5015 before you turn.
Helpful Tip #2 to save space I stacked gear on top of the battery. It melted a hole through the bottom of my tackle bag.
Helpful Advice #3 The gas station at the northwest corner of 121 and 160 (less than 5 miles from the gate) has a made to order grill. Good hamburger.
