Member Craig Miller and I arrived Friday morning to freshly mown grass at the launch area. Sunny skies & hot with mild breezes, 10 to 15 mph. Water temp: 82-85
Before we got the boat set up, Craig caught one from the bank on his first cast on a spinner bait. That set the tone for the day. BassForecast called for an 8.6 (good) day and so it was. My best day in three years. Sore thumb day for sure. It was a balanced day with 20 fish caught before noon and 20 in the afternoon. I added 6 more late fishing solo. We probably lost another 10 near the boat.
Similar to prior reports, most were between 2.5 and 4 lbs. We had a "double" at 4:45 around the south island. Turned out to be the two largest fish of the day, 3.5 and a 4.5. Craig caught the bigger fish with a KVD 2.5 square bill. I caught the 3.5 on a blue/black chatter bait. See picture below. Best baits: chatter baits, crank baits, senko worms and top water. Though we caught 'em on other baits as well. White worked best early in the a.m. darker colors work better in the afternoon.
It’s been said before, but these fish are hard fighters and jumpers! I had one 3 pounder jump 4 feet high next to the trolling motor and spit the hook right back at me. Most areas were productive: islands, dock, & open water. The least productive was probably along the dam. I used a blue/black senko for most of the fish. Weighted Tx rig for most of the day, then weightless late when the wind died down. Craig caught several wacky rigged as well.
Dub was a gracious host and even took our picture and gave us a brief history and intense management efforts on the lake.
Close by, convenient, good weather, nice boat, fantastic landowner, great fishing (and catching), and fellowship in the outdoors. What more could you ask for?
Note to PWF staff: we fell way short of the 22 person minimum.
Thanks again Dub!
