Fished Sulphur Bluff with new member Glenn Wiebe the afternoon of April 8th. Greeted by a skunk after turning over the shortest of the three jonboats. Did not have the usual massive fire ant mound inside the boat, but did have a large web and a friendly little shiny black spider with a red spot. While I was out in the boat fishing, found another friendly little black spider with a red spot. By the way, i found a black widow in the boat on my prior trip to Timber Lake. As property name suggests, tons of timber; at one point my boat was under a tree where the two main arms of the lake converge and I happened to look up and see a 5 foot water snake looking at down at me!
Now to fishing; wind 10-15 mph south-southwest, mostly clear with high, thin clouds, temp in upper 80's (almost hot). Prior night was "Rose" full moon. Fishing calendar projected this would be an "epic" day. Water color somewhat stained and not green, maybe 18-24 inch visibility. Have had tons of rain as roads coming in were very wet. Combined, caught only 18-20, with three at ~ 3 lbs, majority in 1.5 to 2 lbs, and a handful of dinks. Water color too stained to see beds but think most have finished spawning. Fish were primarily in (or on the edge of) the duckweed, coontail, and other vegetation growing out from the bank. The slimy green moss (aka "snot moss") is starting to get really thick. If not already stocked, this lake would be a good candidate for some grass carp. Tried chatter bait, Texas rigged watermelon/red flake lizard and creature bait, but success primarily on free-lined Senkos and Sizmic Toad fished across the top of the thick vegetation growing out from the bank.
