Fished Malouf this morning.  Really nice morning - light winds and not too hot considering its August.  Saw four otters this morning.  One single and one group of three - cool to watch but I suspect they eat every bass they can catch.  Had a great morning on the fly rod and ended up with 25 bass and 1 bream.  Caught just one on top with a small top water fly frog and then the rest were split between a black wooly bugger and a lunch money fly fished on sinking line.  Fished mainly the west side of the lake and caught fish all along the west side.  Man I’ll be glad when fall fishing gets here and the temperature cools down some.  In the mean time its time to go shoot some dove!

Hey Kevin, thanks for the report on Malouf. It's been several years since I've fly fished Malouf. Is there still a boat ramp on the lake? I have a small Twin Troller on a trailer I've been thinking about taking over there but wasn't sure about the ramp or the condition of the road down to the lake on the property…trailer accessible. I would appreciate any info in that regard. Thanks, edd

Edd,

There is a concrete boat ramp. There use to be a steep drop as soon as you come in the gate. About 3-4 months ago we added a lot of rock at the gate entrance to make the grade much more gradual. This makes getting a larger boat to the lake much easier.  From the gate to the boat ramp is likely less than 200 yards.

The ramp is still there.  The road from the gate to the ramp is a little bumpy but nothing a truck/SUV can’t handle when its dry.  I fish Malouf a lot because its close to Dallas and the water usually runs pretty clear.  I pretty much only fly fish and I seem to have much better luck in clear water.  My other clear water favorites are Waterboo in Decatur, Six O in Cleburne and the new property in Valley Mills.

Thanks for the info. It's not a big boat but it is on a trailer with eight inch wheels so probably not good at traversing much rough or deep rutted road. I have fished SIX O for years but they won't allow trailers to be backed into the lake. I'm working on a dolly that might allow me to remove the boat from the trailer and get it close enough to the water to launch. I may be getting too old for that much work. :) Except when my son or grandkids are with me I fish SIX O with a kickboat or a kayak. Good luck with the dove hunting.
