My guest Clint and I fished Timber Lake on an all-day reservation on Sunday, June 23rd. It was a very humid day, but we had a great time in this picturesque setting. We fished up until lunchtime and then drove into Sulphur Springs and took a long and relaxing lunch. We sat and soaked up the A/C at the Chili’s by I-30, and as much as we enjoyed fishing, it was not easy leaving that A/C behind knowing that we had 91% humidity waiting on us according to the Dark Sky app.
For the day, we ended up landing 50 bass. Of those, we culled 14. Clint caught the best fish of the day that went 4.40 pounds. My best fish on the day went right at 4 pounds. The majority of the bass we caught were very healthy and generally in the 16 to 17-inch range.
We fished topwater early and had success on shad colored topwater baits. After the first couple of hours, Clint had success on a Senko and also a 10-inch Berkley worm that was black and had a blue tail. We only caught a few fish on mid-diving crankbaits, but Clint’s best fish of the day came on a mid-diver in Sexy Shad color in 10 feet of water that was caught in front of the trees going into the left creek arm.
We had success fishing shad colored lipless crankbaits and by ripping them through the tops of the grass. Clint was much more skilled at ripping his lipless through the grass without constantly catching grass and was able to do that using his Booyah One Knocker. We caught fish generally all over the lake but the best parts were in the initial areas of the tree-lined sections leading into each arm of the lake. We consistently saw bait in the area right off the covered pavilion. In fact, during the hottest part of the day, I tied on a small finesse swimbait and on 3 successive casts I had a school of bait following my swimbait all the way back to the boat (I am guessing they were small threadfin shad). We also had luck on topwater early and late near the pavilion area and out from the grass that is beside it. We did have one or two blowups on a frog, but we were not able to get on any type of real frog bite.
We drank a TON of bottled water throughout the day and got off the water right at 8 pm just before the huge rainstorm hit.

You are right. Those are threadfin shad. We stocked 25,000 of them in May. Rattle traps/Lipless Crankbaits ought to be the ticket this summer and fall.
