Took my son for a day at Hat and Star on April 12th. I love this place. Its the kind of lake you can get to know quite well after a visit or two. I spent the first two hours fishing too deep. The Bass weren't in the channel area and mid range depth where I've caught them before. My son was fishing out of another boat and found the Bass were extremely shallow. As it turned the key was fishing in less than two feet of water, casting into the dense shoreline brush in the back of the coves. Where there was shade, there was Bass. We caught a total of 31 Bass and culled 16 that were smaller than 16 inches. We also caught a Crappie that had to be pushing a State record. The larger Bass returned to the lake were all between 2 1/2 to 4 3/4 lbs. All were caught on soft plastics.
