I really got lucky on the weather on Saturday 8/11 at Timber Lake. Lots of rain in the area, but only a few sprinkles at the lake, and I'm not sure the temps got out of the 70's during the day. It was 70 when I launched, and I actually put on my rain jacket in the morning because I was cold!! This was August 11; how can that be?
Lake was down about 1.5-2.0 feet, with visibility of a couple of feet and temps in the 85-86 range all day. The weeds have choked off all the little side coves off the 2 main arms, but there is still plenty of water to fish.
The fish were very cooperative. Cool weather and heavy overcast all day really helped. I started off with 3 fish in my first 5 casts with a black buzz bait at the launch area. I thought the fish would be on the outside edges of the weeds, and in the clear pockets in the weeds, but I was wrong. I caught nothing on a topwater thrown around the edges of the weeds; nothing on frogs in the weeds; and nothing on a fluke or senko thrown into the weeds and allowed to fall off the edge. I noticed on my electronics that there seemed to be fish suspended up high in the water column, so I turned away from the weeds and started working my BPS doubledown plopper around the big stumps in the middle of the coves. Bingo!! They were blowing it up out in the 10-15 foot depths. This pattern would hold all day. After the topwater bite slowed, I started throwing senkos in the same pattern, and they would hit it most of the time after a second of two. Also, about 1 out of 4 of my Texas rig fish came on the fall of the cast.
Color was important too. Chartreuse was the color for soft plastics. For the senko, I was using a bright chartreuse bait, with very little action on other colors. For the Texas rig, I used a whole bag of watermelon red Trick worms, with the tail dyed with chartreuse garlic dip. Once again, I caught nothing on green pumpkin, blue, blue/black; just the Trick worm.
I quit about 7:15 because I was out of my Trick worms (bag of 20), and I was basically tired of catching fish (don't think i've ever said that before!!). The main lake point and the launch area were the best locations. I caught a few in the coves, but nothing way back in them. It was a glorious day; caught about 60 (38 harvested) with the largest right at 4.0 pounds (where are the big fish in this lake; I keep asking that).
I did get to drive through a very heavy storm coming home between Greenville and Rockwall. Glad I was in a big truck with all wheel drive. Cars were all over the place from hydroplaning. Great trip

Great report James and congratulations on a terrific "cool" day! I guess if there was a commercial for PWF, that would be it: "I was tired of catching fish." I hope to experience that soon! 3 fish in first 5 casts bodes well for a great day on the water.
