Went down to the dock, jumped in the boat with older trolling motor as the newer trolling motor wasn’t working and took off…slayed them for 30 minutes (7 fish of which 2 were culls) until the trolling motor died. Paddled my way back to the dock, went up to the car only to realize the battery I brought with me was dead. Immediately started praying that one of the four battery’s on the existing trolling motors worked. Bingo…one battery on the newer trolling motor was working. Reached down to clamp the trolling motor on and was engulfed by a swarm of wasps who had made a home in the back corner. After a quick retreat for reinforcements I reengaged with a can of OFF. I drove down from Austin so I was determined to fish today. After a short battle with casualties on both sides the wasps retreated…little did I know it wasn’t the last I’d see of them.

While I was battling batteries and wasps the fish had apparently gotten their fill. I caught another 8 over the next 4 hours with no pattern. Most were caught around the dock with the largest being 4.5 on a jig just off the main dock. A few on swimbait, yellow magic, senko. 86 water temp.

I pulled the boat back in, unloaded my gear, and went up to the car. I headed back down to make sure the boats were clean and heard the wasp whizz by and plant a stinger right on the side of my bald melon. I went down before I could retaliate. Wasps of Escondido…I will be back and I will be prepared.
