Fry
Friday, April 13th turned out to be a day I will remember forever. I had the pleasure of fishing Friday with my good friend Chase from Palestine who was my guest for the day. I was excited to fish this new Crockett property as it was just recently added to the club.
We ended up having a truly incredible day as the conditions were ideal for a great bass bite - partly cloudy most of the day with wind to create ripple on the water and some light rain a few times throughout the day.
We fished from a half hour after daylight until just after 1 pm on the large 31 acre lake. The bite was truly phenomenal and we boated 118 bass. Of those, we culled 105 fish. Our largest fish was 8 pounds (or 7.92 pounds to be exact on the Samson scale). The bait that was on fire was a 3/8 ounce spinnerbait with no trailer and fished high in the water column and burned back fast to the boat. They were crushing it.
We then went into Crockett and had a nice long lunch at a Mexican restaurant across from Wal-Mart that had really good food. We made it back to the property and fished the smaller 6 acre lake toward the back of the property from 3 pm until dark and the bite was still on fire. The 3/8 ounce spinnerbait again was by far the most successful lure although we also caught them on a chatterbait and topwater poppers. We were fortunate to catch 127 bass up to just under 7 pounds in this back lake. The average size of the fish was noticeably larger as we only culled 40 bass in this back lake. We caught somewhere around 12 to 15 fish that each weighed at least 4 pounds.
About an hour and a half before dark, we decided to position the boat smack dab in the middle of the lake and I threw a Yellow Magic bone topwater purely for fun. Crappie started smashing the topwater and I caught 5 crappie quickly this way. We then each switched to a very small swim bait and managed to catch 37 crappie to close out our trip. Chase was in amazement that the crappie were coming up and smashing my topwater popper in the middle of the lake. The crappie were big and large and almost all nice sized slabs.
In total, we ended the day catching 245 bass and culling a total of 145 bass when counting both lakes. Adding in the 37 crappie and we had a once in a lifetime day on the water with 282 total fish being caught.
After we stopped fishing, we had a great visit with the owner Wade. He is a nice man. He was pleasantly surprised we caught crappie in the back lake as he said they never stocked crappie originally in it. Thanks to Steve for adding this phenomenal property to the club. I think Chase ended up staying up half the night cleaning all of the fish. Chase and his family will soon be having a really big fish fry!
We fished out of Chase’s 21 foot bass boat all day which was awesome. With the wind gusts, he put on the Spot Lock which allowed us to stop and really focus in on the areas where the fish seemed to be located. The large lake has a gravel area that is great for launching. On the smaller back lake, Chase found an area over where the jon boat is stored and we were able to launch from there with relative ease.
