Booked an afternoon fishing trip on Saturday, March 31st to new PWF club addition Waterboo Lake and had a fantastic time. What an awesome fishery this is in a really cool location down in a valley beside a mountain. I had a bunch of personal errands to take care of on Saturday so I didn’t arrive at the front gate of the property until a few minutes after 5 pm. Yes, I got a really late start. Made my way to the lake and only got lost once! The landowner quickly came and found me and pointed me in the right direction. This is a HUGE ranch so I appreciated the assist. I also told the owner I now had the distinction of being the first PWF member to get lost on his ranch. :-)
Made my first cast at 5:30 pm. I started out throwing a 1/2 ounce white popper. On the 3rd cast, BAM and I had fish #1 in the boat. I was able to make one full circle of the entire lake bank fishing in the 2 1/2 hours I was able to fish until stopping at 8 pm. The bite was insanely awesome. I ended up landing 43 bass (culled 35 bass and returned 8 back to the lake). I never changed lures as they hit my topwater popper throughout. About 7 pm, I lost the big fish of the day an absolute tank that I conservatively estimate was in the 8 to 9 lb range. She fought like crazy and jumped three separate times. On jump #3, she spit out my popper and it was a crushing blow to have her 10 feet from the boat only to see her swim away without being able to first measure and weigh her. She had a HUGE belly on her so I don’t believe she was spawned out yet. She bit in the area straight across from the lake where you launch the tracker boat. There is a large distinctive rock on the shoreline and she was in the water about 7 to 10 yards from that rock on the mountain.
I had an amazing time. Caught mostly buck bass near the shoreline literally all around the lake. There are some really big fish in here or at least 1 for sure of that I saw first hand even though I caught primarily some smaller fish today. On the way out, I stopped by the owner’s barn and work shop area to give him a report and thank him for letting PWF fish his beautiful lake. The owner Karl and I proceeded to visit pretty much nonstop for the next hour and 45 minutes until I left shortly before 10 pm. Karl is a really great guy (even though he is an Aggie grad) and I found him to be a great host and conversationalist.
I had a blast in the short amount of time that I fished and will definitely be back again in the future.
Happy Easter and God bless.
