I got lucky and caught another perfect fishing day; cloudy all day with temps in the low 70's with light winds and perfect water temps of 69-71.  I started the day on the West lake, and immediately got a good topwater bite on a white yellow magic.  That lasted for a couple of hours, and then they started hitting a two toned senko (watermelon/white).  Tried lots of other lures and colors, but those 2 lures where the best.  Ending up catching 31 from 7-3 (and missed a bunch more); most were small (1-2 pounds), but I was able to boat a 6.55 and a 4.82 on the senko.

at 3:00, i moved over to the East lake and went straight to the timber.  They still liked the same 2 lures, and the action was fast, mostly on the senko.  Caught another 21 on the East lake, including two 3 pounders on beds.  I had 2 hooked (good i thought, on a yellow magic) , that jumped and spit it out just before they got to the boat.  Both were in the 5-6 pound area, and of course i was just sick.  Packed up at 6:45, bloody thumb and all, and headed for the house.

Both lakes are in great shape, full, and the weeds are growing and scattered.  Water was clear, but with the heavy clouds and mist, i could see beds but couldn't see if fish were there.  I finally found 2 willing partners on the East lake to partially satisfy my need to sight fish.

Great report, James.  What a great day on the water!

On the Yellow Magic, do you only throw the 1/2 ounce and not the smaller 1/4?

Also, in addition to the Bone color, do you ever throw the White Shad color (I think this lure has a better white color to it but it also has some splotches of red on it)?  Said differently, I wish the White Shad version of the Yellow Magic would remove all of the red splotches from it.

I only use the 1/2 ounce version; with all the wind we get, the smaller one would be tough.  I wish i knew why the fish like a YM better than other poppers, but i've been in a boat several times where whoever was using the YM was catching at a 2:1 or even 3:1 rate compared to other poppers.

I only use bone and white; I also have a black one for early and late, but it has not been as productive.  Don't know why, but I believe that bone is the best color for any topwater.

Thanks, James.  I am also a big Yellow Magic fan because I love to fish topwater.

In terms of a solid white color, the Lobina Rio Rico is also a nice topwater lure.  It is an expensive popper though and even pricier than a Yellow Magic.  I have only been broken off one time so far in almost a year of fishing on PWF and it was on a nice one that slammed the heck out of my prior white Rio Rico.  Needless to say, I was pretty upset to see my $20+ Rico go bye bye that day.  I guess I need to replace it, but I recently looked on Tackle Warehouse and saw they now charge 22.99 for their white Rio Rico popper.  Yikes!

Guess I will just wait until the next 20 or 25% off sale on Tackle Warehouse.  As you said though, the bone Yellow Magic is a great option and several dollars cheaper as well.

Great day of catching. A White YM is also my go to top water popper. I'm not sure what color it was before but all the paint is off and it is a bone white. As you mentioned the white out fishes the black YM but I have no idea why either.

I, too, prefer the 1/2 oz. version of the Yellow Magic, and bone is my favorite color. It's a great little topwater lure. I've caught almost as many bass on their baby bass pattern, but the fish are usually a bit smaller than the ones I catch on the bone one.
