Well, once again the weather guys were wrong. Checked all the sites on Friday afternoon, and the consensus was that the front would hit Hillsboro about 11 am on Saturday. So, me and fellow PWF member Darryl Stratton decided to cure our fishing fever at Angel Lake (just south of Hillsboro) for a morning session. I walked outside at 5 am to load my stuff up, and quickly realized that the front had already hit in Flower Mound. Strong north wind and rapidly falling temps. By the time I picked Darryl up, and we dodged all the overnight construction, the temp on my truck had fallen to 42 degrees. We passed through the front at about hwy 67 and 35, and the outside temp quickly rose from 42 to 60. We got to Angel Lake at 7:00, with 61 degrees and clouds and fog and zero wind. Loaded our stuff in the boat, attached the trolling motor, and started fishing. I made 3 whole casts before the north wind hit; and Angel Lake has no cover, so we powered back to the bank and decided to just bank fish. We actually stayed till noon (with a couple of warm up sessions in the truck), and left with the temp at 38 and a 15-25 mph north wind. Brutal!!
The fishing was surprisingly good for the conditions. Combined we caught 15, and lost 6 others. All the bass were 2.5 to 4.0 pounds, and very healthy. Nothing even close to harvest size. Most of our success came on white flukes, with some caught on chartreuse buzzbait and spinnerbait. The lake is 2-3 feet low, and much smaller than normal size. You can bank fish all but the center part of the dam due to the smaller size.
Overall, a good trip to get rid of my fishing fever. As I type this on Sunday morning, i'm still cold from yesterday!!
