Took my wife for her first trip to Timber Lake; this is one of my favorites, but i was a little concerned about taking a novice to such a heavily timbered lake.  She did just fine, and only lost a handful of fish and no lost lures.  Along the way, she was able to see deer, hogs, frogs, raccoons, snakes, and a family of otters (we think) that came out and played for 15 minutes or so off the main lake point.

The water was about a foot low and only about a foot or so of visibility because of the recent rains.   Temps started at 69 and topped out at 80 during the afternoon.  We had 4 good fishing periods, 2 of which matched up with the major and minor periods on Bass Forecast.  The first period was basically the first 30 minutes, until the sun peaked over the trees.  We caught them on frogs (my favorite) and my wife using a yellow magic.  After that, it was dead until about 9:30 to 11:00 when we caught them on a green pumpkin texas rigged worms.  Then dead again until about 4-5 when we got them going with a gold single bladed chartreuse/orange spinnerbait.  and finally, back to the yellow magic for about 30 minutes around 7, but then nothing after that.  overall, we caught 33 with 4 harvested.  we had 3 over 3 pounds, with the largest at 3.77 pounds.

color was VERY important.  I was using a green pumpkin ol' monster zoom worm, and was getting bites.  my wife was using several different colors, but did not start getting bites until she switched to the same worm i was using.  The same thing happened with the spinnerbait bite; she was using a white one with 2 white willow leaf blades, and got zero bites.  i switched her over to the bait i was using (see above), and see started getting bites immediately.

we had a great day there, but i think my wife enjoyed watching the otters the most.

James,

It's rewarding when the wife gets to see so much wildlife and catch fish at the same time.  Otters are fun to watch.  I am glad to hear you are using BassForecast.  I always make sure I am fishing my favorite sweet spots during the peak feeding time windows.  I don't fish spinnerbaits as much as I should….makes a lot of sense in murky water and the bites are fun!
