Fished an entire day today at Escondido, beat my all time best by landing 75 fish. Culled 25. Wacky Rigged senkos and TX Rigged PowerWorm. Also had a good late morning top water bite…..and an outstanding evening topwater bite which I didn't expect. Two biggest fish weighed 4.2 and 4.7. It's crazy how just recently I had a slow evening at Kyle compared to today.
Weather was perfect today….very little wind and sun was out. Started at the dam as usual and immediately caught my first 4 lbr on a tx rig. Noticed a bunch of top water action so decided to get in on some of the action and at one point had two fish on both treble hooks. I also noticed small schools scattered around the dam. Worked my way up the east shoreline and caught fish under every tree with TX rig and senkos. Also caught a good amount of fish on standing timber while working my way around the east shoreline.
Made my way to the Northeast corner and got into a good amount of fish there as well. Took out my flipping rod with braid to work the lilly pads and got a bird's nest which I couldn't resolve—-so much for that lol. Least I was able to reel one out of the pads.
Decided to work the deep standing timber and pulled out some nice fish including my second 4 lbr. Took a quick break for lunch then started all over again from the dam with good results….sun was a tad bit unforgiving though.
Now the funny part….I decided to leave about an hour early and talked with the owner (who was very nice). As I was getting ready to leave, the entire lake erupted with topwater action around 45 minutes prior to sunset. I decided to pull my topwater rig out again, got the boat out again, and fished for the remaining 45 minutes versus going home early. When I got in on the action, it seemed like every other cast landed a fish. Even caught two bluegill. There were some big fish….and I mean BIG fish that were really chasing the baitfish near the surface. One thing I did notice….if my presentation was "off" (exm: didn't walk the "walker" properly), then the fish didn't seem to "fall" for the bait…..but as long as the presentation was correct, the fish were all over my topwater lures.
I don't know what it is with this lake, but I really do enjoy it. Wasn't expecting the top water action today so that wa a bonus….if I had to guess I'd say I caught a quarter of my fish on topwater.
I'll see if I can post photos tomorrow.
