Well, today was just another in the seemingly-endless number of fishing trips the day after an unexpected cold front. I bypassed the east lake (whitecaps) and launched at the west lake, hoping it would be a little less windy there. It was. Still, it was 42° with about a 12-15 mph wind, so my hands were cold all morning. I started out right away boating a few 2- and 3-pounders on a black/blue flake Ribbit frog and one each on a Senko and a Yellow Magic, but there was a pretty long time period between them. I lost more than I landed, mostly because my hands were almost numb. (I was very glad I had decided to wear silk long underwear!) All of the fish I contacted were in water less than 2 feet deep. Water temp at West Twin ranged from 59.2° to 61.9°, and the water clarity was about a foot at most.
The wind finally laid down some around 2:30, so I moved to the east lake in hopes of more activity. Good choice. With all of the standing, leaning, laying, and sunken logs, I found more eager fish than I had all morning at West Twin. Again, though, I landed few of them. I never contacted but one big fish, and she jumped, threw the frog, and probably laughed at me all the way back to her preferred environment. I’d guess her weight at around 5 pounds. I caught most of my east lake fish shallow, on a chartreuse/white Bull Ribbit, with a few others on a black/green hollow body frog, a white buzz bait, and a wacky-rigged, weightless black/blue flake Senko. Nothing at either lake on chatterbaits, single-spins, T-rigged worms, flukes, swimbaits, a Pit Boss, or creature baits. Visibility at the east lake was about 18”, and the water temps (when I noticed them, were 59°-63°.
I finished the day at 7:30, totally beat up by the wind, having boated a total of 16 bass over 14” and one dink. Not that great, but it was good to be on the water again, and I only broke one rod.
