Member John Bedore and I went fishing this Saturday at the beautiful Dogwood Lakes (West Lake).  We arrived just as it was getting light enough to see.  We fished the lake pretty hard.  When it was all said and done we realized that we had caught most of our fish in the middle… In the middle of winter, in the middle of a cold snap, in the middle of the lake, in the middle of the day (in the middle of the peak feeding period).

We only caught 29 bass but 7 of those bass were over 6 pounds with the largest being 7.4.  The fish were wanting chase baits and soft plastics just about equally, but we really had to try a lot of lures to find out what they were wanting.  It was 36 degrees with a brisk wind when we started fishing but as is often the case when the wind blew, we caught fish.  The evening turned out to be very calm and we couldn't buy a strike from 4:30 on.  The water temperature hovered around 65 for most of the day.

The lake was quite low.  We spoke to Rocky (always pleasant) who let us know that he is keeping the lake low to combat weeds.  It did serve to concentrate the bass in the remaining water and the big girls seemed ready to bite if you put what they wanted right where they wanted it.  Only 5 fish less than 16 inches for the day, so it was about quality not quantity.

I was a great day to be in the middle of God's creation!
