Fellow member John Shepard and I departed from west Houston at 6AM (2/1/2017)and pulled up to the boat launch at 8:15AM. Needless to say we were surprised to see a 3rd party two-man crew, preparing to launch a boat in the Big Lake for the purpose of conducting a electro shock survey. After a polite meet and greet they graciously elected to postpone the planned survey and departed to the upper lake (off limits to the PWF Club).
Conditions: Overcast with 10MPH southerly winds with an ambient air temp of 62F. Winds continued to strengthen to 12MPH (with occasional gusts up to 15MPH) from the southwest through the morning and the sky became clear by 11AM and the air temperature climbed into the 70's. These same wind conditions continued all afternoon till 5PM. The water was stained with two – three feet of visibility depending on the bank orientation relative to the prevailing wind. We brought a Chupacabra but elected not to launch it due to the wind.
Between the two of us we landed 44 healthy bass! Most of the prespawn bass that we landed appeared to be female and ranged between 16 – 20” in size (we only caught 4 less than 16”). The bass were chunky and feisty, and fought as if they were bigger! The bite alternated between pulses of fast activity to slow activity all day long.
John got the day started at 8:30AM by working a green pumpkin worm along the north bank, west of the boat ramp and immediately got action. I was stymied until I tied on a green chatterbait at 9AM and fished the western portion of the lake on the other side of the road by the bridge. Game on! We fished the entire lake and can only report lack of success along the length of the dam on the east side of the lake (we tried a number of lures with zero bites).
Most of the bass caught, were taken on green or combination white-chartreuse colored chatterbait set up. We had some additional success using a KVD 2.5 crankbait and also had positive action using a size 3 Mepp’s spinner with a gold blade. The winds finally died at 5PM so we each switched over to a topwater presentation. John threw a buzz bait and I broke in my new bone-colored Yellow Magic (thanks to all of you who were nice enough to provide feedback to my recent inquiry on the Forum board!). We each threw these till dusk. We each had multiple blow ups and both landed our final bass of the day. Both of the final bass were about 14” in length. None the less the topwater action was fun!
All in all a fine day on Post Oak!
