Saturday (9/10/16) turned out a lot better than i expected. Left my house in Flower Mound at 3:30 am with a line of storms heading our way from the north. Arrived at the dry storage to get my boat near Lake Fork at 5:30 with lightning and wind and rain crashing all around. Drove through some strong winds and lightning, getting to Timber Lake about 6:40 am. The storms were apparently out in front of the actual cold front, because the wind was out of the south for the 1st hour or so. then, the wind switched to the west, and finally to the north, and blew at about 20 mph (with some higher gusts) the rest of the day until just before sunset. We only had a few light sprinkles during the early morning, and it stayed cloudy the rest of the day, until it cleared around 4:00 pm.
i feared the worst from the weather; usually fishing AFTER a cold front is not good. the rising pressure and clearing skies usually is not good for fishing. But, on this day, i think we were helped by the wind and the cloud cover, because we had a buzz bait bite all day. No frog bite, and only a couple on topwaters. We also did good on texas rigs (my buddy was using a purple fire tail, and i was using a watermelon chartreuse tail). Overall, we caught a total of 48 (14 harvested and in the freezer at home), with the largest at 4.0 pounds. Most of the fish were in the 14-16 inch range, and very strong, fat, and healthy.
Water temps stayed around 86 all day. The lake is about 2 feet low and pretty clear. The tall dead trees in the lake were really swaying with that north wind, so we were very careful not to stay under them. There is still a thermocline at about 10-12 feet, and we caught nothing below that level. We almost ran into a group of hogs (15 or so) just as we were getting to the gate off the main road, and saw 3 deer bounding through the field just beyond the gate. The lake fishes tough with a north wind; it blows right over the dam and up the coves, making it tough to navigate through all the timber. My trolling motor was really tired at the end of the day. Our thumbs were mangled and bloody, so it was a great day.
