Slot Fish
Two of us fished Indian Hollow and wow, what a great property. My intention was also to get a map made but my second battery lost its juice and what I didn't realize was any power loss to the unit makes the entire file unusable. So I have two gigs that worked and two more that didn't (next time I will use smaller file sizes so if this happens I don't lose so much). I did get some of the key areas mapped and will be back eventually to complete the lake.
This is an absolutely beautiful property. The lake has that "cool factor" for whatever that's worth. Not only was everything quiet, green and peaceful but the lake was designed very, very well. There is a lot of timber right next to key channels and drop offs that should be key areas for big mammas. That being said, we hooked into one six pounder but nothing larger this trip which was shocking because this looks like a big fish factory. The big boat launch looked a little steep for my liking so we used the small boat launch and found out that it actually isn't very steep once you enter the water and probably wasn't the best for backing in a trailer with high clearance. We got the boat off just fine but it took a little effort to get back up on the trailer. With two of us cranking the winch, we got it handled.
We caught fish…. lots of fish. We quit counting at 50 and it got HOT so we made a shorter day of it. The trick for us was hitting the two points below the small boat launch that have timber on them and the two creeks that run next to them. The secret bait was a green pumpkin crawdad with really "flappy" claws on it. By that I mean, when it falls through the water the thing looks like it's playing the drums. Some do, some don't and I really believe the action seems to help (Look at the Zoom Super Speed Craws or the Rage Craws). With 20 lb fluorocarbon line on and a 3/8 oz weight, the trick was to throw that crawdad up on those points or on the timber in the creeks and slowly drag it to you after letting it soak a bit. If you want that little extra, put the tips of the claws in Spike It. We caught over 30 off the lower point down by the dam and I think we could have kept catching them but we went off hunting a bigger bite. I was committed to fishing deep yet every time I couldn't get bit. I didn't mark anything deep or anything suspended out over deep water but in this heat I thought some of the bigger fish might be out there. I think in another few weeks it will be worth a try. Most of the fish we caught were three pounds and under but there were two four pounders and the one six.
Here's a zoomed out view of what I have.
Here's the first good point headed south from the boat launch. Fish the heck out of it and the creek next to it. It's full of good timber, some of which you can see and some you can't.
Here's the point that seemed to be loaded up. Fish the snot out of it and the creek next to it. With the adjacent deep water and plenty of timber transitioning onto this shallow feeding area, somebody is going to catch a big girl here.
If you have electronics, take them. You'll be glad you did. There's lots of good stuff to fish and if you don't then don't sweat it. Use the timber you can see to predict where the other stuff is. We fished the other areas of the lake but for us, the timber was the key. I don't think we caught anything on the dam. Also, just because you catch three fish off of one log, don't think there aren't more there. It was shocking how loaded up certain areas were.
Hope this helps gang.
Tight lines,
Jackson
P.S. I will let you guys know when I'm able to complete the map.
