I made my first trip to Timber Lake on Friday, May 6th.  I was fishing alone, and arrived just as the sun was rising.  Air temp was a cool 52 degrees with no wind.  Water temps started out at 73.5 and warmed into the low 80's in the afternoon with light and variable winds and a bright blue sky.  Not sure what the high was for the day, but it was definitely warm in the afternoon.  There are some weeds in the lake, with a large area of hydrilla (i think it's hydrilla, i'm not great at identifying that stuff) down the bank that the ramp is on (around the flooded metal building).

The bass in this lake are CRAZY.   I ended up catching 45 or so, with 13 harvested.  My largest fish (on a frog) was 5-14, and I had another just over 5 and two more over 4.  Caught them mostly shallow (although the banks drop off really quick there), and on pretty much everything I tried (watermelon fluke, watermelon wacky senko, frogs, chartreuse/orange single bladed spinnerbait, and a brand new whooper plopper (my new favorite lure).   The bass in this lake act like they've been taking steroids.  They are really strong, love to jump, and will find every stump to wrap your line around.  I spent all morning losing hooks (flukes and wacky rig) and re-tying due to frayed line.  I only had braid on one reel, with 12-15 lb mono on the others.  At lunch, while I took a break and ate, I re-spooled another reel with 50 lb braid and 2 others with 20 lb trilene big game mono.  That worked; I had no problems after lunch.

Got to see 4 deer bounding across the pasture as I entered the property, and 2 big hogs on my way out.  This lake reminds me so much of a mini Lake Fork from the early 90's.  It's open out in front of the dam, with 2 major arms that have dense trees, some areas I could not get my boat into (just like Lake Fork was back in the early 90's).  The trees that have not broken off yet are a little scary - I would not want to be on the lake with a strong wind.  I bumped several of them, and they are really wobbly.  BE VERY CAREFUL, ESPECIALLY AROUND THE TREES THAT ARE ALREADY LEANING.

Had a great day, and look forward to returning to this beautiful property.

Whooper Plopper - I might get one just based on the name, that and this good report.

Whopper Plopper is indeed a great topwater lure - just work it like a buzz bait or a Spook. Glad you enjoyed Timber Lake. Some members were afraid it was way past its prime for whatever reasons, but - obviously - it's still a great PWF water!

The Whopper Plopper is fun to use and there are many different ways to fish it.  i had 2 bass jump completely out of the water and land on the lure, like they were trying to stun it.  i also had 3 different spinner baits break (i lost the fish and ended up with just the arm with the blade on it); they actually broke the metal arm on a big 1/2 oz spinner bait!!
