John and I had a great time yesterday afternoon fishing “Rock Chimney”. The weather was perfect, with a light breeze and temperatures in the upper 70s. The water level was up substantially from my previous visit about a month ago. Our total catch and release was 28 fish: one was a beautiful, chunky three or four pounder—we also pulled in 3 or 4 two pounders, half a dozen one pounders, the rest were smaller.
We fished from shore at the gravel bar on the north side a short while, spent most of the day all over the lake in my 12 foot Jon boat, and the last hour throwing top water along the southern shoreline. We caught a couple bass on blue/silver rattletrap, a few on 8’ diving crankbaits, and most of the fish on watermelon red or Amistad Special worms. Buzzbaits got us 4 feisty fish right at dusk.
Overall it was a satisfying and relaxing day. We look forward to the average size of the bass increasing over time.
