A friend and I fished Black Jack Ranch from 4-8 PM on Saturday May, 9th.  The wind started out strong and got stronger as we fished.  Weeds and wind do not mix well and there were plenty of both in play at this lake.  It was all we could do to stay on the lake and at certain times the wind was blowing so hard that we were going steadily backward with the trolling motor on high.

Throughout all of this we did fairly well on bass.  We had to fish techniques  that allowed us to cast sidearm and low to the water so that we could even manage a cast and retrieve.  The bass that we did catch were very healthy and on the large side.  We managed to catch 28 bass with 24 of them being 3 pounds to 6 pounds.  Most bass came from the mid lake area, We tried a variety of lures and they were not to particular but they did seem to prefer brighter colors (which has not been my typical experience at this lake).  Colors like fire tiger and chartreuse seemed to out perform more subdued colors.

Surprisingly, and against my advice, my friend would cast a Bomber Model A (Fire tiger) whenever he could find a small opening in the weeds.  He caught most of his better fish doing this.  I fished frogs, in all sorts of varieties (swimming, kicking legs, rubber band legs, floating, dog-walking, spitting). I had a 6 pound bass come two feet out of the water to take one of the frogs.  That image will be emblazoned in my mind for a while.  Most of the early fish came right out in the middle of the lake.   I was less than 50% on hookups on the frogs or we would have has MANY more fish. Later fish came on the inside edge of the weed line.  But on this lake weed line is a relative concept as it mostly all grass.
