Keeper
Probably we are the two craziest members in the club. Heard it was going to cool off. Bingo alarms went off and we arranged a trip for all day on Thursday May17th. I remember Ted telling me when it rains in DFW it doesnt rain at Six O. We got to the lake at 7AM gray skies no rain. The lake is near capacity. Bass were chasing dragonflies. They were leaping two feet out of the water. Oh, let me also note the lake is a mirror, not a breeze in site. Where you stop the boat that is where it stayed. The gods were rewarding us for something unknown to us. Nothing worse than fishing and positioning the boat. or those days of the 5 minute drift of the entire lake. Back to the report. Around 8:30 it started to drizzle. we put on our rain gear and looked for black skies, or lightning and listened for a clap of tunder. No it just rained harder but the fish kept biting. Top water, plastics, crankbaits and chatterbaits didn't matter. Around 11:30 we decided to have lunch at the dock. The skies opened up and it poured hard for 2 hours. We still caught fish from the dock. I placed a cup on the ground and it had rained over an inch during lunch. Around 1:30 pm we decided to go out again. Slight drizzle that stopped within the hour,
We headed directly across the lake to the flats. Nailed some nice 3 to 4 pounders on top water baits. Then as we got to the back of the cove a huge mushroom cloud of mud appeared and in the mud is some kind of creature. Partner thought it was a catfish but in 13 years I have never seen a catfish at Six O. Its head was rounded. As fast as it appeared it disappeared into the cloud.
Next interesting thing happened at 5PM. The lake came alive. I mean the entire lake with sucking at the surface. But we aren't catching a thing. So I go to the tackle box and pull out a Rebel Teeny crankbait. Bam first cast a coppernose, two cast the same and the third. I examine the water and see a hatch is occuring of a black bug. The coppernose were feeding on that hatch. As fast as it started it stopped at 5:30pm. I wish I would have had my fly rod and a size 12 wooly bugger black.
We continued to fish until 8pm. In total somewheres around 40 fish probably more but we never were good at counting. I did harvest 10 that I kept on ice and took to the barber this morning for a haircut.
Right now Six O is probably as full as I can ever remember. A good 50 acres maybe more. The fish were in the new vegatation. As we left for the night we saw two jack rabbits and 14 deer on the road out.
