My wife and I had one of our best days ever on Kickapoo June 18th. We arrived early and launched our bass buddy boat right at dawn. We headed to the east end of the lake and immediately started catching fish. Caught 5 in the first half hour using buzz baits and frogs. Switched to a shad colored Baby One Minus and caught quite a few more. Then switched to soft plastics - caught quite a few more on watermelon with yellow Spike-It tail Senkos and shad colored Super Flukes.
We seemed to catch a few fish everywhere we fished, but the west and east ends seemed to be best. Not a lot of grass to foul your lures, and not a lot of submerged timber. Water was clear to 3-4 feet.
Most of the fish were dinks, ranging from 8-12 inches. Caught a few over 14 inches. All were released as the harvest goal has been met on this lake.
Sun broke through and the wind picked up around 9:00 and the fishing slowed some. Trying to get out of the wind we headed back to the west end throwing Senkos. I had a torn lure on - barely holding together. Pitched it toward the shore any hooked a bruiser. It was 20.5 inches long - 5 pounds! My biggest fish in a year! My wife hooked and lost two big fish. All together we caught about 35 bass - definitely our best day in a long time. Lots of very small fish with a few big ones mixed in to keep you interested. We will definitely be back!
I fished the little pond some (about 10-15 casts) and caught nothing there.
A word about the property: The place is clean and beautiful overall - a pleasure to fish. Lots of birds and overly friendly cows lol. If you are a first time visitor here, note that the entrance drive is the second drive past the mailbox mentioned in the directions, not the drive going up to a house. Launching a boat can be tricky but very doable. Look for deeper water on either end of the launching area, as you can get your boat in or out easier there as opposed to the shallow muddy area in the middle.
So go and enjoy Kickapoo. We certainly did!
